Qualcomm to buy Qualphone

Date:   Aug 18th, 2006

Qualcomm said on Friday that it would buy privately held wireless technology developer Qualphone for $18 million in cash to expand its own position in the market.

Qualcomm, which sells chips and technology licenses for cell phones, said the acquisition would help it enable integrated features such as photography and video for phones that have high-speed wireless links to the Internet.
San Diego-based Qualcomm made the acquisition at a time when wireless service providers around the world are rushing to provide everything from video to music on cell phones as they aim to boost revenue beyond that generated by traditional voice services.

Qualcomm is the dominant provider of chips based on CDMA, the main U.S. wireless technology, and it also sells chips and licenses based on W-CDMA, a technology that is growing in popularity in Europe and other parts of the world.

It said the deal with Qualphone, also a San Diego company, would close later this month.
