Cingular Wireless is the largest wireless company in the United States, with more than 54 million subscribers who use the nation's largest digital voice and data network. Cingular is dedicated to providing customers with wireless technology designed to enrich their lives.
Cingular is a joint venture between the domestic wireless divisions of AT&T Inc. and BellSouth. AT&T Inc. owns 60 percent of the company and BellSouth owns 40 percent, based on the value of the assets both contributed to the venture.
Cingular was formed by the merger of BellSouth Wireless and SBC Wireless in 2001. The company then acquired AT&T Wireless in 2004. Cingular's current network uses GSM/GPRS technology, with a legacy TDMA/AMPS network. The company uses both the cellular (800 / 850 MHz) and PCS (1900 MHz) bands. Cingular also offers EDGE high-speed data over most of their network, and is deploying WCDMA (UMTS) + HSDPA technology as their 3G upgrade path.
